If a routine blood panel or an ultrasound turned up the words fatty liver, you have probably already searched fish oil for fatty liver disease and run into a wall of contradictory answers. Some pages treat omega-3 supplements as close to a cure. Others dismiss them as marketing dressed up as science. The clinical trial data lands somewhere more specific than either extreme. Fish oil supplementation, at doses well above what a single standard softgel provides, has reduced the amount of fat stored in the liver in several controlled studies, without qualifying as an approved treatment for the disease itself.

What the liver guidelines actually say
The picture here is less dramatic than some marketing suggests. The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases publishes practice guidance for clinicians managing NAFLD and NASH, and that guidance does not list omega-3 supplements as a recommended treatment for the underlying liver disease. The reasoning tracks the Parker meta-analysis closely. Reducing liver fat on a scan is not the same as reversing inflammation or scarring, and the enzyme data needed to prove a real treatment effect has not been consistent enough across trials to earn a formal recommendation.
